What is BHSG?

Banyule Housing Support Group Incorporated (“BHSG”), started in 1973, is a not-for-profit agency that operates in Melbourne’s north-east to assist those who are homeless or in threat of homelessness.

Features of BHSG include and:-

  • flexibility of a small agency to react new and changing needs;
  • low overheads; and
  • links to the local volunteer base; and
  • networks with local and government agencies to ensure efficient and effective service delivery.
Donations over $2.00 are tax deductible.

How BHSG operates

The agency is a referral agency.  Over 90% of client interaction is where the clients are, and not in the BHSG office.  The organisation works intensively (i.e. weekly contacts) with its clients to assist the clients “back” into the community.  As well as transitional accommodation, BHSG programs provide clients with support services such as (but not limited to) advocacy, rental bonds, furniture for new accommodation, rent assistance, and food and grocery vouchers.

The Committee of Management is an unpaid, volunteer body.  BHSG has nearly 50 members, many of whom participate in the agency’s volunteer and fund-raising activities.
